Serving in Salford
The city of Salford is part of the county of Greater Manchester, and as well as a thriving business centre is also home to plenty of green spaces, something that does not usually first spring to mind when you think of the area.
Covering 37 square miles, Salford is home to approximately 250,000 people, and is a thriving business centre, attracting some of the country’s brightest stars in media, music and academia. The impressive Salford Quays, the location of MediaCity UK, has been home to the BBC since their 2006 relocation from London.
Salford’s famous centre for visual and performing art, The Lowry, houses an incredible collection of paintings and drawings by L.S Lowry, the largest public collection in the UK.
The city also has many famous music links and has also been the subject of a song or two itself – “Dirty Old Town” by Ewan MacColl was inspired by Salford, even though he himself denied his Salford roots for many years.
One of the least known facts about Salford is that it was the birthplace of vegetarianism, over 200 years ago. The Vegetarian Society was formed here.
Salford’s interesting history dates back thousands of years, and consequently, a lot of the housing still standing is hundreds of years old, which can cause problems for residents.
